3 Min Read April 2, 2026

At the start of 2026, ZIP System® multi-purpose tape became available nationwide. This is the latest tape innovation from the makers of ZIP System sheathing. True to its name, it is meant for multiple different uses. Let’s go through some common questions and uses.

What is ZIP System® multi-purpose tape used for?

ZIP System multi-purpose tape is designed for a variety of applications throughout the jobsite, with particular emphasis on its suitability for deck joist and stair stringer protection. It can also be used for miscellaneous repair and maintenance needs around the jobsite (bundling pipes, insulation, tools).

How is it different from standard ZIP System® flashing tape?

This tape is very similar to the standard ZIP System flashing tape. The main two differences are that ZIP System multi-purpose tape is 2”wide and that it should NOT be used to seal panels seams or in other construction flashing applications.

Why is ZIP System® multi-purpose tape 2-inches wide?

ZIP System multi-purpose tape is 2” wide and 75 ft long. Most traditional deck tapes are about 1-5/8" wide, and duct tape is usually around 1.88", but a full 2" width gives you more flexibility. It covers better, works for more applications, and installs cleaner without hanging too far over the joist edges.

What substrates are compatible with ZIP System® multi-purpose tape?

Below is a list of substrates that ZIP System multi-purpose tape can adhere to.

What temperature range can it be installed in?

ZIP System multi-purpose tape can be installed in temperatures anywhere between 0° F and 120° F. The service temperature ranges from -40° F to 240° F.

Is a roller required for proper adhesion?

A roller is not required for proper adhesion. When installing onto deck joists, apply the tape and apply firm pressure – rolling could help significantly, but it is not required.

Refer to the second page of the sales sheet for further direction.

Does the surface need to be cleaned before applying the tape?

For best adhesion, surfaces should be clean and free of excessive dirt, dust, moisture, or debris before applying the tape.

What code requirements exist for deck protection and weatherization?

At this time, joist tape for deck joists and stair stringers isn’t required by code, but it’s widely considered a best practice. Composite deck boards are often rated to last 20+ years, while pressure-treated lumber is typically rated for about 8–10 years. Applying ZIP System multi-purpose tape to deck joists helps protect the framing and can extend the overall life of the deck structure.

Where can I find ZIP System multi-purpose tape?
